Pots of colored encaustic medium (wax, damar resin and pigment) kept warm on the hotplate
The surface is covered with several layers of clear encaustic medium and each layer is fused to the surface with heat.
Colored encaustic paint can be dripped onto the panel
I usually work with the panel laying flat
Things can be scraped off the surface
Wax can be painted over existing marks and drips
New layers are fused to the layers below
Adding more pigment to the wax mixture makes the color more opaque
I use tape to make narrow lines and straight edges
Colored encaustic paint is brushed over the tape
The tape is lifted before the wax cools too much
The wax lines have to be fused to the surface
laying down tape to make a curved line
color is painted over the tape
The tape is lifted
The line is fused to the painting surface
More dripping
Drips can be painted over with translucent encaustic paint
Everything has to be fused.
I like to use found stencils. This is the backing for hole reinforcers for loose leaf paper
Color is painted over the found stencil
The stencil is lifted while the wax is still warm
